The build is essentially a scale, using a load cell and a HX711 module to weigh the candy, an Adafruit RP-2040 Feather to handle logic, and a 4Ω speaker to play audio. The program first weighs the full bowl of candy, then tares the load cell and converts the load cell readings to pounds. It then calculates the number of pieces taken after a stable count, given that each piece of candy weighs 0.03 lbs and accounts for an error of ±0.005 lbs per candy piece. Next, the program plays a prerecorded message depending on the number of pieces taken. The program also mixes the message with an alarm sound if the number of pieces taken is two or more, dampening the alarm while the message is playing, then loudening it when it is done. The alarm stops when the user replaces the excess candy to the bowl. I made a custom enclosure using Alibre CAD software and a BambuLab 3D printer. The take one sign was made using a Cricut machine and an inkjet printer. The most difficult part of this project was calibrating the load cell and converting the raw data to pounds due to the slight nonlinearity of the load cell. In the future, I hope to implement a small TFT display to give the user visual feedback.
